Community Organisations Commendations

UNISON Birmingham Branch Black Members Group

Paul Crookes has traced his family roots all the way to Africa. The audience were in awe of what he had to share and asked a lot of questions. He also signed his book for participants who wished to buy. I am still getting positive feedback from this event, people are asking when is he going to do the next one. It is nice what Paul Crooks is doing for the community.

Dudley Archives and Local History Service

Dudley Archives and Local History Service booked Paul Crooks to give his ‘Tracing your Family History’ workshop as part of our Black History Month celebrations in October 2014. Paul has an incredible gift for engaging his audience and weaving their experiences into the fabric of the inspiring work he has conducted in tracing his own ancestry. He really brought home the relevance and the importance of documenting and recording and tracing ancestry to our group, and gave a great deal of practical advice with regard to
how to get your research off to a flying start.

Paul’s explanation of his peerless work to trace his own ancestry and the narrative he created from his discoveries blended seamlessly into a discussion of our participants’ lives and experiences in coming to and growing up in Britain, their memories in the community and their hopes for the future generations. There is such a power, poignancy and significance to Paul’s story that you cannot help but come away inspired and determined to uncover the hidden stories in your own ancestry.
Paul has made a lasting impression on our group and as a result I’ve already had enquiries from colleagues in other departments of our Service about his availability to deliver further classes or workshops. I can honestly say that his workshop was one of the best of its kind I’ve seen and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend his talks and workshops to other archives. We feel very lucky to have worked with him this year and would love to do so again in future! “

We had a good response from those attending Saturday – written comments were great. Several said they would go to do their own research which is what I was aiming for – I’m glad you made the point about doing the research in this country.

Hi Paul,

… I have spoken to people who were there and just received the feedback forms – all of which suggest that you gave an excellent talk and in many people’s opinion you provided the best event of the series. I quote, briefly…

‘Paul Crooks was fabulous, very inspirational; can’t wait to start my quest to find my family roots’
‘Have appreciated every single week. This has been a brilliant, enlightening and awe-inspiring event. Please let’s have more’

Thank you so much for agreeing to do this.
